In the 21st century there has been an important expansion of our thinking about ‘childhood disability’. Many of these ideas are not so much new as better emphasized, while others are being studied carefully and are leading to a firmer evidence base to support them.
In this talk I would like to present and explore several related ideas, and then show how – when woven together – these approaches allow parents of children with developmental challenges, and the people who work with them, to reframe what we do, why we do it, and why it matters.
The ideas to be shared are:
- Thinking differently about the biomedical and ‘rehabilitation’ traditions of our field, in favour of less emphasis on ‘diagnosis’ and more efforts directed at promoting child (and family) development and functioning;
- Reflecting on how the WHO’s ideas about ‘health’ in its ICF framework, and CanChild’s F-words for Child Development, open new vistas for our work;
- Situating the family, rather than the child, at the centre of all our work, and offering ‘early intervention’ for parents;
- Moving past ‘fixing’ and ‘normal’ as goals in our field; and
- Taking a life-course approach to our intervention work right from the start.
These ideas will offer participants an opportunity to reflect, and question, and discuss, and challenge – the speaker, their colleagues, and their own beliefs! It is expected that everyone will have fun!
