Title:
Lessons Learned from Applied Family Systems Early Childhood Intervention Research and Practice
Abstract:
This presentation will include a description of the lessons learned from more than 50 years of research and practice using an applied family systems model to guide the implementation of early childhood intervention with young children with identified disabilities and developmental delays and their families. The model includes four components: interventions based on family-identified needs, the support and resources for needs satisfaction, family and family member strengths for obtaining needed family and child support and resources, and practitioner use of relational and participatory family-centered practices to strengthen existing family, parent, and child capabilities and promote the development of new competencies. Research supporting the relationships among and the consequences of the four components of the model will be briefly described and illustrated with real-life examples of what applied family systems early childhood intervention practice “look like” from parents and other caregivers perspectives of their everyday lives and their involvement in early childhood intervention.
